Paris, 3 April 1831.
I hear nothing more about the Savings Bank. I ask Mr Dejean to call on Mr [Riout?] and then Mr [Chézard?], to find out whether the public meeting has taken place and whether the account has been reprinted and published. If so, I ask for six copies and recommend remembering to send copies to the prefect and the commercial court as well. If it has not been done, find out why, press Mr [Chézard?], and obtain from Mr [Cau…?] or Mr de Cazes that it be done without delay.
Chaulet has cancelled 7,500 francs for the 5th and 6,000 for the 3rd. Thus, instead of having funds to send him, he has 34,125 francs too much. I shall therefore pay the proceeds of your drafts to the Syndicate.
When sending you the Syndicate account as at 21 March, I could not explain what reduced it in this way. Tell me which sums you find there debited to me at the Crédit for which you do not yet see an entry, and I shall identify them for you.
I have therefore settled the [account(s)?] of [Montauban?]: the one for 6448.50, advance interest 214.93; the other for 5877.60, six months’ interest 117.83; [calculation and corrected figure] 97.[10?]. So I was mistaken. Your interest is to be [calculated?] at the corrected figure rather than 59.10. Please enter it; the balance in your favour is 668.
I have received your letter of yesterday, which left me no reply to make. I have also received Mondary’s. He says that all Moreau’s protested bills [inserted: for the son?] are entered in the Bills in Arrears account. However, the Moreau account is debited with 4,028.85 on 18 November [between lines: and 10,000 on 20 December], and the Moreau Protested Bills account—which must be balanced and suppressed, as [stated?] on 21 December 1830—is debited with 97.25 and credited with 39,142.80. These will therefore be entries to reverse. Please agree on the matter with him.+
Notes
Documentary annotation: + On the other hand, since I must present Mr Moreau’s account in full, pending my entering the total of his overdue bills to his debit in my books I must enter them in the account to be submitted for the liquidation. I therefore ask Mondary to draw up and send me a statement of principal, maturity, coupons and expenses. Here, moreover, is the draft of the letter I sent him on 30 March concerning the Strasbourg shares. There will be 13,561.71 to credit to Mr [G…?]; 13,442 [small mark uncertain] in 5% annuities, having sold, as you know, the 2,600 francs on the Exchange [for Chaulet?]. After taking a copy of this draft, return it to me. A thousand friendly wishes, [initial H?]. The rotated marginal addition is transcribed separately. Its instructions distinguish the account to be submitted for the liquidation and the writer’s own books. Local names, abbreviations and the corrected interest figure remain qualified.
